Katarina Witt started to ice skate at the age 5 years. Her success allowed her to show her skill and was accepted into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school for gifted children. The coach Jutta was also at the school. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982, when she placed second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught everybody's eye, and from that point forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic Success At Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating following a heatedly-contested competition. Four years later, she won another contest that was even more competitive. Free skates were not a success, however the gold medal was awarded to her because of her performances in both the compulsory figures (short program) and mandatory figures. Witt was the first woman after Sonja Haenie who was the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following a career that was successful acting. The crowd was captivated by her, despite her having placed seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
